Can-Am glory days
This year McLaren is showing off the Can-Am side of its heritage, a lesser-known area of the British marque’s expertise. Back in the ’60s and ’70s, the team’s rear-winged marvels won so many back-to-back Can-Am championships, they’re still considered the winningest competitors in series history.
In honor of this heritance, the world’s second-oldest racing team brought a storied lineup to the festival, including Fittipaldi’s M23, the 1988 MP4/4, the 1998 MP4-13, and the MP423, which claimed the world championship in 2008. We also caught a glimpse of the F1 GT3 ‘road car’ that famously left its purpose-built betters in the dust in the 1995 24 hours of Le Mans contest.
2014 McLaren P1
Folks at Goodwood were further treated to a live preview of ‘McLaren P1‘ – the long-awaited progeny of the legendary F1 road car of ’90s fame. Products of the ‘NASA of the car world,’ McLaren supercars are always dressed to impress and the featured P1 was no exception. Under the hood, the car is clearly an engineering prodigy, boasting a twenty-first century combination of McLaren’s Formula 1 secret sauce with state-of-the-art plug-in hybrid technology.
Clearly, even the most horsepower-obsessed carmakers are feeling the fuel economy squeeze. No matter; at just over 900 brake horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque, the supercar will have as much restraint as a rocket at liftoff. With a twin-turbo, nearly 4-liter V-8 paired with an electric motor designed in-house, the P1 will be a unique beast. Even the sensible electric components have been tweaked to enhance performance.
Britain’s most celebrated and mysterious auto maker put on a memorable show at the 2013 Festival of Speed. By the looks of the P1, we’re sure this masterpiece will be wildly fun to drive. The 2014 P1 will be a lovely addition to the list of the most impressive automobiles we’ve seen so far this century.Comments
McLaren Automotive will use its first ever international motor show appearance to preview its next generation ultimate supercar – the P1 – which takes much of its technological and spiritual inspiration from the company’s Racing division. P1 has one simple goal: to be the best driver’s car in the world on road and track.
At the Paris Motor Show, Mondial de l’Automobile 2012, P1 is previewed as a design study. Next year a production version, which the company aims to put on sale within 12 months, will be revealed.
‘P1 will be the result of 50 years of racing and road car heritage,’ says McLaren Automotive Executive Chairman Ron Dennis. ‘Twenty years ago we raised the supercar performance bar with the McLaren F1 and our goal with P1 is to redefine it once again.’
‘Our aim is not necessarily to be the fastest in absolute top speed but to be the quickest and most rewarding series production road car on a circuit’, says McLaren Automotive Managing Director Antony Sheriff. ‘It is the true test of a supercar’s all round ability and a much more important technical statement. It will be the most exciting, most capable, most technologically advanced and most dynamically accomplished supercar ever made.’
When P1 goes into production later next year, it will sit above the 12C and 12C Spider, in terms of both price and performance.
Following the excursion on public roads, I arrive at the track. I bring the 12C to a steady halt as my co-pilot, a McLaren engineer, walks me through the launch control procedure. After flipping the requisite switches and pressing firmly on both pedals, releasing the brake ignites a weirdly efficient takeoff with almost no wheelspin, and a jowl-flattening whoosh of acceleration that viscerally delivers on its promised sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 3.2 seconds.

Vodafone McLaren Mercedes joins a host of international brand leaders, all of whom earned recognition from the Edison Awards judging panel for their ongoing commitment to technical innovation and excellence. Vodafone McLaren Mercedes team principal Martin Whitmarsh said: “I’m delighted that our ongoing efforts to manage and improve our carbon efficiency have been recognised by the Edison Awards judging panel. This is a fantastic achievement for the whole team.
“The nominees’ list at last night’s ceremony in New York read like a Who’s Who of the great and good in the world of inspirational technical innovation, and I’m immensely proud that our team has been recognised on that list.
“While our silver medal is further validation of the steps we’ve made, and certainly helps showcase our efforts on a global level, it is still merely the starting point for an ongoing and concerted mission to ensure that Vodafone McLaren Mercedes conducts its business in an environmentally conscious and responsible way.”

McLaren showcases the arrival of the MP4-12C in five cities across the US, mainly in the markets where dealerships been awarded the rights to the prestigious new brand. The video starts with the vehicle’s port of entry in Baltimore, Maryland with the MP4-12C rolling off the ship fresh from the United Kingdom.
“This film is exciting as it represents the arrival of McLaren Automotive in North America. We are thrilled to be launching with the 12C, which is such a tremendously innovative car, and we look forward to building a long term future.” said Tony Joseph, McLaren Automotive North America Regional Director.
McLaren Dallas officially launched its new showroom with a proper celebration January 19, featuring a culinary cornucopia of British fare and marking the arrival of the McLaren MP4-12C high-performance sports car.
“We are pleased to be adding McLaren to our Premier Collection,” said Ken Schnitzer, Chairman of Park Place Dealerships. “McLaren has a rich heritage of producing premium sports cars for the track and the road. Texas and the bordering states are a big market so we are excited about the enormous potential of the McLaren. We anticipate a strong demand for this limited production car.”
McLaren Dallas is one of only 10 dealerships throughout North America to represent the luxury brand. In addition to marketing McLaren throughout Texas, McLaren Dallas will reach out to prospective customers in Colorado, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana. Park Place expanded its Lemmon Avenue facility, which houses Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Bugatti, and Maserati, to accommodate its newest brand.
Guests toasted the new dealership with Moët & Chandon Imperial Champagne for a toast as well as British inspired cocktails using Belvedere Intense Unfiltered 80 vodka. Central Market supplied a cornucopia of British Cheeses that recently received top marks at the British Cheese Awards. They also sent each guest off with scones upon departure to highlight the new Central Market opening at Preston and Royal in mid-February. The James Gabriano Flamenco Jazz Trio entertained guests.
Wendy Krispin Caterers treated guests to passed hors d’oeuvres such as microgreen smoked salmon and egg salad on a chive biscuit, miniature buffalo blue cheese burgers with shallot aioli as well as a small plate station that included a tossed pomegranate, roasted turkey, butter lettuce and avocado salad in a balsamic vinaigrette; crab and spicy bacon risotto with manchego cheese shavings; and beef filet tips on truffled creamy polenta and asparagus spears.
The McLaren F1 road car, which was launched in 1992, set the world land speed record for a production car, and was the first road car to feature a carbon fiber chassis. McLaren also worked with Mercedes-Benz through a joint venture to produce the Mercedes SLR McLaren, which sold almost double the volume of the next highest produced carbon fiber based high performance sports car. Now McLaren has developed its own distribution and retail network in the U.S.
“Even with a car as meticulously designed and engineered as the MP4-12C, we know that satisfaction from driving the car must be matched with a world-class retail experience, and that is why we’ve selected partners like Park Place to represent us in North America,” said Tony Joseph, Director, McLaren North America. “Driving a great sports car is only part of the experience of owning a McLaren. As we establish an identity in the Texas market, we hope that customer service and support become as identifiable with McLaren as our success on the F1 circuit.”
McLaren Dallas will service the vehicles from the dealership’s specially equipped facility in Dallas that will house a duplicate set of parts for every McLaren sold by the dealership. By keeping parts in stock at all times, the dealership will expedite the car being returned to the owner.
With the arrival of the 12C in North America, it becomes the first in a range of high performance sports cars from McLaren Automotive. Along with future models within the range, it will challenge the world’s best sports cars, benefiting from the expertise and virtuosity of the McLaren Group. The 12C is set to re-write the rules of sports car design through Formula 1-inspired engineering, a revolutionary carbon fiber MonoCell chassis, and an absolute focus on efficiency and quality. It represents ‘pure McLaren’; from unique engineering to bespoke design where everything is for a reason.
